What is Deep Tissue Massage?

Our bodies are very resilient.  However, due to injury, illness, poor posture, trauma, stress, etc. our soft tissue begins to form dysfunctional "holding" patterns.  We no longer stand upright.  Movement is difficult. Headaches develop.  Sleep is interrupted.  We feel stressed.  We feel pain!

Deep tissue massage is a targeted approach to relieving these holding patterns.  Myofascial (myo- muscle, fascial- connective tissue) trigger points may form in muscle causing referred pain elsewhere in the body. For instance, a trigger point in the shoulder can cause pain through the side of the head and behind the eye.  Deep tissue massage can relieve these trigger points and allow the body to return to functional movement.  Referred pain from trigger points can be alarming and unrelenting.  When a trigger point is released, the nervous system will respond more efficiently and stress is reduced.

Sometimes people live with the pain of a trigger point or "holding pattern" for years and resign themselves to constant pain and discomfort.  The most rewarding part of my work is witnessing a release in these painful patterns and the joy that follows.
